OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a 2D and 3D graphics API maintained by the OpenGL Architectural Review Board.
OpenGL.org states that, "OpenGL is the premier environment for developing portable, interactive 2D and 3D graphics applications. Since its introduction in 1992, OpenGL has become the industry's most widely used and supported 2D and 3D graphics application programming interface (API), bringing thousands of applications to a wide variety of computer platforms."
OpenGL supports a plethora of operating systems such Linux, Windows and MacOS X whilst OpenGLES gives embed device support. It can be used as backend of other libraries (like SDL) and was used to create some commercial first person shooters like Valve's Half-Life and id's Quake 3.
